Two Women Injured in Weekend Fire Succumb to Their Injuries – First Status Update

The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal is continuing to investigate the fire that severely damaged a home in New Castle, Delaware. Two occupants, aged 90 and 72, died at
Christiana Hospital. The 72-year-old woman died on April 2, 2022 and the 90-year-old woman died on April 3, 2022. This fire is still under investigation.

The total number of fire deaths for this year in the state of Delaware is now 14, up from 10 in 2021, Chionchio said.

The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating this morning’s fire that severely damaged a home in New Castle, Delaware. Two occupants were seriously injured in the blaze, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.

Chionchio said the fire, reported shortly after 6 a.m., occurred in the Onaway Place block of units in the Garfield Park neighborhood near New Castle Avenue. The Minquadale Fire Company arrived on the scene with flames shooting from the single story house and two people trapped inside. Firefighters rescued the occupants of the burning house. Both victims were taken to Christiana Hospital. They were admitted in critical condition. Initial reports that a child was one of the injured have not been confirmed by authorities.

State fire investigators are currently on the scene investigating the origin and cause of the fire. Damage from the fire was estimated at $100,000. This fire is still under investigation.
