Early morning fire in DeLand tears through garage and drives 2 people out of house

DeLAND, Florida. – A fire that burned in the garage of a home in DeLand early Friday morning was extinguished by firefighters with no injuries, according to the DeLand Fire Department.

Department Engine 83 arrived at the Curry Rise Court home around 12:41 a.m., according to a news release.

The fire ignited the attached garage, blowing a hole in its roof, but crews managed to stop it spreading to the house.

The fire was extinguished within five minutes of firefighters arriving, the statement said. Two people in the home when the blaze started were woken by smoke detectors and walked out to safety, firefighters said.

The garage was heavily damaged and the house was damaged by smoke, the statement said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but crews do not believe it to be suspicious.

The Red Cross is now helping the people living in the house.
